POW! at TLA 2018 Conference

Congratulations to Tricia Boucher, Texas State University, and Kristina Krengel, Birdville ISD, for their outstanding performance in the Pitch of the Week (POW!) contest at Texas Library Association Annual Conference! Their team, The Pop Culture Homages, came up with the idea for the “Beat Box Blender Bar,” a method for creating mixed drinks from a set of three remote-controlled blenders that create musical beats. As you make music using the wireless remote controlled blenders, you also mix drinks! (at least, I think that was the idea!)

Fall 2017 Pitch of the Week (POW!) Final Challenge, November 30, 2017

Congratulations to The Fearless Scarecrows, the grand champions for Fall 2017 Pitch of the Week! Team members include Divyanshu Sharma, a junior Computer Science major who minors in Mathematics, Whitney Adindu, a sophomore Nursing major, and Subrat Parajuli, a sophomore Electrical Engineering major who minors in Sustainable Engineering. This week’s randomly drawn prompt was comprised of Journalism, Drone and vinyl sheets. The Fearless Scarecrows pitched their Drones361 service, offering to send aerial drones into war-ravaged or natural disaster-stricken locations to provide news and health information via video projection to the misfortunate inhabitants therein. Each member of the Fearless Scarecrows will receive $50 gift cards.

Fall 2017 Pitch of the Week (POW!) Preliminary Challenge #3, November 16, 2017

Congratulations to The Common Pheasants, winners of the November 16, 2017 Pitch of the Week (POW!) Preliminary Challenge. Team members include Hailey Phillips, a freshman Biology major who minors in Biochemistry, Mehul Jain, a junior Computer Science major who minors in Mathematics, Sameer Ingavale, a senior Business Management major who minors in Entrepreneurship, and Rahul Dwivedi, a sophomore Mathematics major who minors in Business. This week’s randomly drawn prompt was comprised of child care, scanner and bricks. The Common Pheasants pitched IMPRINT, a system for automatically calling roll and tracking children in a day care, using scanners built into the bricks of the walls. The Common Pheasants will advance to the final round of POW! to be held on Thursday, November 30 from noon-1:00 in the UTA FabLab. Each member of the winning team at the final round will receive $50 gift cards.

Congratulations to The Leaf Peepers, winners of the November 2, 2017 Pitch of the Week (POW!) Preliminary Challenge. Team members include Cam Nguyen, a senior Computer Science major, Clarissa Osagie, a junior Biochemistry/Biology double major who minors in Creative Writing, and Nathan Sundquist, a senior Economics major who minors in Business Administration. This week’s randomly drawn prompt was comprised of beer brewing, vacuum molding machine and sticky notes. The Leaf Peepers pitched a system for custom designed vacuum molded beer bottles and kegs, using sticky notes as an easy to learn labeling system for new employees. The Leaf Peepers will advance to the final round of POW! to be held on Thursday, November 30 from noon-1:00 in the UTA FabLab. Each member of the winning team at the final round will receive $50 gift cards.

Pitch of the Week Final Round, April 26 2017

Congratulations to The Beardy McBeardo Faces, winners of the Pitch of the Week 2017 Final Challenge. Each member of the Beardy McBeardo Faces will receive a $50 gift card. Team members include Whitney Adindu, Cynthia Ochoa and Karam Khalil and their pitch was for a holographic interface for video calls. According to judges, The Beardy McBeardo Faces had the most dynamic pitch, demonstrated clear teamwork, and appealed to the senses of the audience.

Team members include Suehyun Lee, a sophomore Nursing major who minors in Leadership, Reece Walker, a senior Public Relations major who minors in Advertising, and Cyril Lutterodt, a Psychology and Computer Science double major. Their pitch was for Liquid Latex Clothing that can be custom designed and printed from a video game interface. Pitch of the Week Contest (POW!) at UTA Libraries

In April, UTA Libraries will host a game-show-style pitch contest called POW! (Pitch of the Week!).

We seek undergraduate students from all subject disciplines to compete. Every contestant will get a $10 gift card, and winners of the final round will upgrade to a $50 gift card. Gift card options include Amazon.com, MakerShed, Starbucks, Einstein Bros Bagels, and UTA printing funds.

No special knowledge or skills are required. Contestants will be placed in teams and given a random prompt. Teams will have 20 minutes to brainstorm an idea for an invention, a product, a service, a business plan or solution to a problem. Teams then have five minutes to pitch their idea to the judges.

There will be four rounds total (three preliminary and one final) occurring each Wednesday in April between noon-1:00 in the FabLab (1st floor of Central Library).

We are also seeking judges for the contest. UTA faculty and staff, Arlington business and community leaders, and Peer Academic Advisors (PALs) are encouraged to volunteer to serve as judges.

We only have a few weeks left, so anything you can do to help spread the word would be greatly appreciated.
